IN OTHER WORDS | My Favorite Movie

departed imdb (1)

The Departed is my kind of movie. And yes, this review is a few years overdue, but I heard “Gimme Shelter” yesterday, and now, as always when I do, scenes are stuck in my head. The soundtrack runs through my brain. (And, there are a lot of YouTube links in this post.)

Favorite line ever. In any movie. Mark Wahlberg kills it.

I’m the guy who does his job, you must be the other guy.

Unless you have been under a rock for almost a decade, you know the story: An undercover state cop infiltrates an Irish gang while a police force mole, working for the same mob, race against time and each other. Once it’s clear there is a rat, they must track down each other before enemy exposure. This creative and complex story with Martin Scorcese brilliance, acted by countless talented men and women, and a backdrop of some of the best music ever. Ever.

The Departed marks Scorsese’s third use of The Rolling Stones “Gimme Shelter” in a movie, the others: Casino, and Goodfellas. For my money, he can pipe that song into my brain and let it run on repeat, as long as it is juxtaposed with the movie’s version of Pink Floyd’s “Comfortably Numb” (performed by Roger Waters, Van Morrison and The Band). “Comfortably Numb” backdrops perhaps one of the most touching and emotional sex scenes in any film. Ever. Leonardo DiCaprio and Vera Farmiga

If you haven’t watched it recently, do yourself a favor. It’s time again. If you’ve never seen it, you are missing out. Big time. Here’s a bit of Dropkick Murphy’s and a trailer.

Two more highlights, and I’m off to Netflix . . . pass the popcorn.

Final Scene: Street Justice

  1. I agree, great movie. The end surprised me a bit but I loved it.
